Abstract: | Heterogeneous reactions occurring on ice particles present in polar stratospheric clouds (PSC) may be important in ozone destruction. One such reaction is HCl+ClONO₂→Cl₂+HNO₃. Computer simulations of adsorption of HCl on single crystal ice have been carried out in modelling surface adsorption of HCl on type 2 PSCs. For stratospheric conditions, maximum surface coverage of ice by HCl is calculated to be 10⁻⁷ monolayer. This value, obtained by taking surface disorder into account, is much too low for reaction of HCl with chloronitrate to proceed rapidly on ordinary ice in one step. Calculated value of surface coverage is much lower than recent experimental values for uptake of HCl by polycrystalline ice, and validity of interpretation of uptake of HCl by polycrystalline ice as being due to surface adsorption is questioned. |
