Record #117326:

Radio-echo sounding of Tyndall glacier, southern Patagonia / Gino Casassa.

Title: Radio-echo sounding of Tyndall glacier, southern Patagonia / Gino Casassa.
Author(s): Casassa, Gino.
Date: 1992.
In: Bulletin of Glacier Research. (1992.), Vol. 10 (1992)
Abstract: Reports first radar sounding measurements through glacier ice in Patagonia, carried out in December 1990. Two similar versions of impulse radar designed to penetrate temperate ice were used and ice thickness was measured successfully at seven sites across transverse profile in ablation area. Parabolic profile of glacier bed was obtained, with maximum ice thickness of 616 m at site located 3 km from left margin. Concludes that greater thickness in centre of glacier exceeds range of radar.
