Abstract: Abstract only. Measurements made of propagation of shock waves across artificial joints in marble. Shocks of 1 μs duration and 1.2 and 5 GPa amplitude were incident on 1 mm wide joints. At lower stress level, water-filled joints attenuated incident stress to about 40% relative to propagation through same thickness of rock. No increased attenuation was seen at 5 GPa. Attenuation of peak stress levels for ice-filled joints is 30% greater than for water-filled joints at both stress levels.
