Abstract: Abstract only. Energy release rate criterion for crack definition at interface between two aligned orthotropic media is derived by using singular integral equations. Results of analysis are demonstrated by growing controlled cracks normal to grain boundary of fresh-water bi-crystal with c axes of individual crystals normal to each other. By measuring crack-opening displacement of main crack, grain boundary energy is calculated by relating local stress intensity factors of deflected interface crack to main crack opening displacement.
