Abstract: Reviews Antarctic Treaty and International Union for the Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources (IUCN) attitudes toward tourism, and outlines preliminary study of shipborne tourism made late December 1991 to March 1992 on Half Moon Island, South Shetland Islands. Also describes five-year monitoring plan with objectives of discovering ways to minimise short- and long-term effects of tourism on ecological communities and to provide factual basis for regulation under Antarctic Treaty System (ATS)
