Abstract: Measured in December 1988. At time of ice melting, shift in population dominated by diatoms (ice) to one dominated by flagellates (water) was observed. Shift was not due to inability of ice diatoms to grow in water column. Macrograzing and/or sedimentation are suggested as possible causes. Remaining small autotrophic forms released by ice would constitute significant seeding stock for growth of ice-edge blooms.
