| Abstract: | Describes studies of near-surface structure of western margin of Greenland ice sheet to detect buried crevasses, which are hazardous to movement of heavy transport across ice. Typically, firn produced sequence of reflections caused by thin ice layers within compacted snow, but certain localized areas showed different structure, with few internal reflections; these areas were interpreted as isolated blocks of mature glacial ice buried within firn. Two distinctly different crevasse responses were detected by radar; these are described. |
