Record #116858:

Inter-hemispheric transport of volcanic ash from a 1259 A.D. volcanic eruption to the Greenland and Antarctic ice sheets / Julie M. Palais, M.S. Germani, G.A. Zielinski.

Title: Inter-hemispheric transport of volcanic ash from a 1259 A.D. volcanic eruption to the Greenland and Antarctic ice sheets / Julie M. Palais, M.S. Germani, G.A. Zielinski.

In: Geophysical Research Letters. (1992.), Vol. 19(8) (1992)
Abstract: Strong volcanic sulphuric acid signal corresponding to age of 1259 AD has been reported previously from Greenland, Antarctica and Arctic Canada. Now, discovery is reported of volcanic glass shards from ice core from Summit, Greenland. Major element composition are identical to those from South Pole, confirming assumption that sulphuric acid signal in ice cores is inter-hemispheric time stratigraphic marker. Composition of glass shards is similar to those produced by 550-700 a BP eruption of El Chichon, Mexico, suggesting that it may be source of shards.
