Effect of microcracking on the deformation of ice / Ian J. Jordaan, Barry M. Stone, Richard F. McKenna, Mark K. Fuglem.

Title: Effect of microcracking on the deformation of ice / Ian J. Jordaan, Barry M. Stone, Richard F. McKenna, Mark K. Fuglem.
Author(s): Jordaan, Ian J.
Stone, Barry M.

Date: 1992.
In: Canadian Geotechnical Journal. (1992.), Vol. 29(1) (1992)
Abstract: Field tests and full-scale experience with Arctic structures show that crushing of ice is accompanied by large fluctuations in load. In addition to variations of loads in time, significasnt spatial variations across contact surface also occur. Deformation takes place in thin layer of damaged ice, which appears near structure or indenter surface. It is important to model deformation and strength of ice in this zone. Various aspects of modelling are discussed, in particular, measures of damage and relation to deformation.
