Record #116498:
Late Weichselian glacier retreat in Kongsfjorden, West Spitsbergen, Svalbard / Scott J. Lehman, Steven L. Forman.
Title: | Late Weichselian glacier retreat in Kongsfjorden, West Spitsbergen, Svalbard / Scott J. Lehman, Steven L. Forman. |
Author(s): | Lehman, Scott J. Forman, Steven L. |
Date: | 1992. |
In: | Quaternary Research. (1992.), Vol. 37(2) (1992) |
Abstract: | Chronology reconstructed based on geomorphic and stratigraphic record of ice retreat, relative sea-level relationships, and ¹⁴C-dating of associated marine organic materials. Seaward extent of glacial drift and fjord bathymetry constrain secure reconstruction for ice sheet near mouth of fjord at 13 ka BP, but do not rule out possibility that more extensive glaciation occurred earlier during Late Weichselian. Deglaciation occurred in two stages during intervals of accelerated global ice-sheet melting and rapid oceanic and atmospheric warming in more temperate latitudes. This coincidence may have resulted from contemporaneous increases in poleward transport of oceanic heat. |
