Record #116485:

Physical and mechanical properties of Hobson's Choice Ice Island cores / J.P. Poplin, Terry D. Ralston.

Title: Physical and mechanical properties of Hobson's Choice Ice Island cores / J.P. Poplin, Terry D. Ralston.
Author(s): Poplin, J. P.
Ralston, Terry D.
Date: 1992.
In: Cold Regions Science and Technology. (1992.), Vol. 20(2) (1992)
Abstract: Study to improve estimates of ice forces on offshore structures. Describes ice-core retrieval and laboratory tests (126). Strain rates from 10⁻² to 10⁻⁶ s⁻¹; temperatures of -15, -10, -5, and -2°C. Greatest strengths measured at strain rate of 10⁻⁴ s⁻¹; least at 10⁻⁶ s⁻¹. Strong strength dependence on temperature was identified at intermediate and high strain rates where mean strength decreased 60% over temperature range evaluated. When tested at same temperature and strain rates, ice near bottom of ice island was stronger than that near top.
