Increases in Antarctic penguin populations: reduced competition with whales or a loss of sea ice due to environmental warming? / William R. Fraser, Wayne Z. Trivelpiece, David G. Ainley, Susan G. Trivelpiece.

Title: Increases in Antarctic penguin populations: reduced competition with whales or a loss of sea ice due to environmental warming? / William R. Fraser, Wayne Z. Trivelpiece, David G. Ainley, Susan G. Trivelpiece.

Date: 1992.
In: Polar Biology. (1992.), Vol. 11(8) (1992)
Abstract: Questions "central tenet of Antarctic ecology" that increases in chinstrap penguin Pygoscelis antarctica populations in Antarctic Peninsula region since 1950s reflect decrease in baleen whale stocks; presents alternative hypothesis attributing population rise to gradual decrease in frequency of cold years with extensive winter sea ice cover. Supporting data derived from 1988 AMERIEZ (Antarctic Marine Ecosystem Research at the Ice Edge Zone) programme, recent satellite images of ice cover, long-term surface temperature records and penguin demography.
