| Abstract: | Ugrians - Voguls (Mansi) and Ostyak (Khanty) - are found around middle and lower Ob and lower Yenisei, Tyumen and Beresov. Brief history of their origins and migrations is followed by history of writings about them, especially by Hungarian B.Munkácsi. Sections: concepts of human nature; origin and birth; death and burial; spirit world - home and private spririts - clan spirits and spirits of place; images; clothing and equipment; sacred places; dwellings and enclosures; sacred trees; sacrifices; priests; forest, water, sky, earth, Underworld and sickness spirits; shamans; superstitions about animals - mammoths were not feared; natural objects and phenomena; rituals, including music, directed at spirit world; spells; special rituals for women; shamans' clothing, equipment, roles and performances. |
