| Abstract: | Pristine areas have diminished drastically in northern hemisphere in last few decades. Forestry, oil and gas production have changed land use and caused pollution. Many such areas have been hunting, fishing or reindeer herding areas for thousands of years without serious disturbance. Intact areas are very important for biological diversity and CO₂ - oxygen balance. 12 such areas were designated in Finland in 1990. Most is barren mountain or birch forest. Forestry will be allowed in parts. Article describes newly established wilderness research project of Arctic Centre. |
