Record #114731:

Perennial water stratification and the role of basal freshwater flow in the mass balance of the Ward Hunt Ice Shelf, Canadian high Arctic / Martin O. Jeffries.

Title: Perennial water stratification and the role of basal freshwater flow in the mass balance of the Ward Hunt Ice Shelf, Canadian high Arctic / Martin O. Jeffries.
Author(s): Jeffries, Martin O.
Date: 1991.
Publisher: Fairbanks, AK: University of Alaska, Geophysical Institute/Centre for Global Change and Arctic System Research
In: International Conference on the Role of the Polar Regions in Global Change : proceedings of a conference held June 11-15, 1990 at the University of Alaska Fairbanks. (1991.), Vol. 1.
Abstract: Describes pronounced perennial water stratification in Disraeli Fjord behind Ward Hunt Ice Shelf, Ellesmere Island. Ice shelf acts as hanging dam at mouth of fjord and minimizes mixing between inflowing meltwater runoff and sea water. Meltwater runoff is impounded to depth of 41 m, about equivalent to depth of ice shelf. Creates feedback system in which fresh water flowing out of fjord contributes to basal accretion on ice shelf at rates in excess of surface ablation rates. Discusses this paradox with reference to global warming.
