Strengths and weaknesses of sea ice as a potential early indicator of climate change / Claire L. Parkinson.
Title: | Strengths and weaknesses of sea ice as a potential early indicator of climate change / Claire L. Parkinson. |
Author(s): | Parkinson, Claire L. |
Date: | 1991. |
Publisher: | Fairbanks, AK: University of Alaska, Geophysical Institute/Centre for Global Change and Arctic System Research |
In: | International Conference on the Role of the Polar Regions in Global Change : proceedings of a conference held June 11-15, 1990 at the University of Alaska Fairbanks. (1991.), Vol. 1. |
Abstract: | Considers four criteria listed as characteristics for potential early indicators: should be expected from physical theory and/or modelling to exhibit large climate signal; should be readily measurable on global scale through routine observations; should have low enough and known natural variability to allow climate signal to be distinguished from background noise; and changes in it should be expected to lead changes in other climatic variables. Concludes that sea ice is not suitable. |
