Derivation of snow water equivalent in boreal forests using microwave radiometry / J.L. Foster, A.T.C. Chang, Dorothy K. Hall, Albert Rango.
Title: | Derivation of snow water equivalent in boreal forests using microwave radiometry / J.L. Foster, A.T.C. Chang, Dorothy K. Hall, Albert Rango. |
Author(s): | Foster, J. L. Chang, A. T. C. Hall, Dorothy K. Rango, Albert. |
Date: | 1991. |
In: | Arctic. (1991.), Vol. 44(supplement 1) (1991) |
Abstract: | Microwave emission from dense coniferous forests may overwhelm emission from underlying snow-covered ground, resulting in underestimation of snow water equivalent (SWE). Preliminary results indicate that this can be minimized when fraction of forest cover can be accounted for and used as additional input in microwave algorithms. However, 25% of boreal forest of North America and Eurasia may be too dense to enable SWE determinations to be made using passive microwave techniques alone. |
