Abstract: Knowledge required for assessing engineering performance of frozen soils. Sonic method is non-destructive and easier to implement than other methods. Continuous sonic measurements were carried out on overconsolidated clay from +20 to --160°C, and results compared with those from other approaches, such as theory of Gilpin and consistency limits-based estimation, or with classical measurements, such as nuclear magnetic resonance and differential calorimetry.
