Record #113895:

Preliminary results on marine geological studies om the eastern Weddell Sea, Antarctica. Permafrost on the continental shelf? / Boris Winterhalter.

Title: Preliminary results on marine geological studies om the eastern Weddell Sea, Antarctica. Permafrost on the continental shelf? / Boris Winterhalter.
Author(s): Winterhalter, Boris.
Date: 1991.
In: Antarctic Reports of Finland. (1991.), Vol. 1 (1991)
Abstract: Outlines results of field activities, 12-13 February 1990, which were based on single-channel seismic reflection profiling, echo-sounding profiling, and core sampling. Core penetration of only 1 m achieved; on later examination, this was found to be due to extremely hard till plug jammed in core cutter, underlain by medium compact fine-grained till. Suggests that till had been frozen, i.e. permafrost had been struck at depth of 1 m below present sea floor. In addition to geological work, airborne observations revealed flow of frazil ice near outer edge of Kvitkuven Ice Rise, on Riiser-Larsenisen.
