Abstract: Compares data from pure laboratory-grown ice of uniform 1 mm grain size with that from multiyear sea ice in study of strength of ice under triaxial loading and in conditions of temperature and strain rate giving rise to behaviour ranging from brittle (cracking and fracture) to fully ductile (crystal plasticity). New servo-controlled triaxial testing systym for large samples (40 mm diameter) is described. Discussion, p. 361.
