Record #113855:

The tensile and compressive fracture of ice / E.M. Schulson.

Title: The tensile and compressive fracture of ice / E.M. Schulson.
Author(s): Schulson, E. M.
Date: 1991.
Publisher: Berlin: Springer
In: Ice-Structure Interaction. IUTAM/IAHR Symposium, St. John's, Newfoundland Canada 1989. (1991.),
Abstract: Brittle fracture of ice under uniaxial tension and compression is discussed in terms of nucleation and propagation of internal cracks. Shows that fracture under both applied stress states can be understood in terms of theories previously developed for fracture of brittle solids. Also shows that applied strain rate which marks transition from ductile to brittle behaviour under compression can be explained quantitatively by invoking fracture model which incorporates crack-tip creep and frictional crack sliding. Discussion, p. 184-187.
Notes:
