Record #113635:

Snow accumulation and climate over the Grand Lake catchment, Newfoundland / C.E. Banfield.

Title: Snow accumulation and climate over the Grand Lake catchment, Newfoundland / C.E. Banfield.
Author(s): Banfield, C. E.
Date: 1991.
In: Eastern Snow Conference. Proceedings. (1991.), Vol. 48th Annual Meeting (1991)
Abstract: Late-winter snow cover over this catchment was analyzed for 1934-90 with object of examining sensitivity to winter temperature and precipitation. Snow depth and water equivalent were obtained from annual snow-survey records and compared with corresponding temperature and precipitation series from nearby climatological stations. Mean winter temperature exhibited general warming trend until mid-1950s, followed by shorter oscillations to present. Winter snowfall and and snow/rain ratio showed short-term variability throughout. Thus, over whole period, depth and water content of late-winter snow blanket were strongly correlated with mean winter temperature and rainfall, but not with winter snowfall. Within basin, variations in snow conditions are influenced by site elevation, distance inland, and overall character of winter weather.
