Record #113193:

On the relationship between snow distribution and snow melt / Yngvar Gjessing.

Title: On the relationship between snow distribution and snow melt / Yngvar Gjessing.
Author(s): Gjessing, Yngvar.
Date: 1991.
Publisher: Oslo: Norwegian National Committee for Hydrology
In: Arctic hydrology. Present and future tasks. Hydrology of Svalbard - hydrological problems in cold climate. Seminar Longyearbyen, Svalbard, 14-17 September 1990. (1991.),
Abstract: Experiments demonstrate that energy transfer from warmer patches of bare ground within snowfield to snow surface downwind is of small magnitude. For given rate of snow deposition in watershed, snow melt will occur more efficiently if snow is equally distributed in watershed. Thus, discharge from snowmelt will be higher for watershed with smooth small-scale topography that is not exposed to wind, compared to discharge from area with rough small-scale topography that is exposed to wind.
