Record #112864:

The duration of the active phase on surge-type glaciers: contrasts between Svalbard and other regions / J.A. Dowdeswell, Gordon Stuart Hamilton, Jon Ove Hagen.

Title: The duration of the active phase on surge-type glaciers: contrasts between Svalbard and other regions / J.A. Dowdeswell, Gordon Stuart Hamilton, Jon Ove Hagen.
Author(s): Dowdeswell, J. A.
Hamilton, Gordon Stuart.
Hagen, Jon Ove.
Date: 1991.
In: Journal of Glaciology. (1991.), Vol. 37(127) (1991)
Abstract: Tests hypothesis that surge-type glaciers in Svalbard have significantly longer active phases than glaciers in other regions for which data are available (Alaska, Iceland, Pamirs and Caucasus, Tyan' Shan', Karakoram, Andes). Requires systematic review of existing reports, combined with field and satellite studies. Detailed time series of observations through active phase of surge cycle are presented for several ice masses in Svalbard. These give evidence on, for example, rate of downglacier propagation of surge front. Some possible causes for unusual length of Svalbard surges are suggested.
