Record #112858:

Paleothermometry by control methods / Douglas R. MacAyeal, John Firestone, Edwin D. Waddington.

Title: Paleothermometry by control methods / Douglas R. MacAyeal, John Firestone, Edwin D. Waddington.
Author(s): MacAyeal, Douglas R.
Firestone, John.
Waddington, Edwin D.
Date: 1991.
In: Journal of Glaciology. (1991.), Vol. 37(127) (1991)
Abstract: Recovery of past climatic conditions from ice-sheet bore-hole temperatures can best be accomplished using calculus of variations to minimize mismatch between observed profile and solution of heat equation which depends on unknown climate history. Here, control methods and simple one-dimensional heat equation and temperature-depth profile observed at Dye 3 are used to infer surface temperature of south Greenland over past 30 ka. History displays Younger Dryas cold event at 9 ka BP. Bore-hole palaeothermometry by control methods may thus resolve controversy concerning interpretation of Greenland ice-core isotope records.
