Initial response of columner-grained ice to drop impact / Lorne W. Gold, G.W. Timco, Robert M.W. Frederking.
Title: | Initial response of columner-grained ice to drop impact / Lorne W. Gold, G.W. Timco, Robert M.W. Frederking. |
Author(s): | Gold, Lorne W. Timco, G. W. Frederking, Robert M. W. |
Date: | 1991. |
Publisher: | St. John's, Newfoundland: Memorial University of Newfoundland, Ocean Engineering Research Centre |
In: | POAC'91 : the 11th International Conference on Port and Ocean Engineering under Arctic Conditions, September 24-28, 1991, St. John's, Canada. (1991.), Vol.1. |
Abstract: | For impact of cylindrical indenter with spherical head on thin (191 to 368 mm) S2 floating ice, predominant mode of failure was vertical shear along grain boundaries rather than spalling and subsequent crushing of material at surface. Results show that determination of mechanical response of ice to impact requires knowledge of: dynamic characteristics of indenter; effect of ice on these characteristics; force transfer from ice to underlying water; time dependence of indenter acceleration, velocity, position and depth of indentation; and properties of ice cover. |
