| Abstract: | Distribution and species composition of phyto- and protozooplankton investigated in relation to Weddell Sea hydrographic and sea ice regimes in late winter; growth and development during winter-spring transition also studied. Evaluated condition of winter phytoplankton and role of several factors such as enhanced light levels in coastal polynyas, intrusion of meltwater and of "seeding" cells into upper water layers during spring thaw. Extensive bibliography. |
