Abstract: Examines influence of physical and social environmental stressors on short-term and long-term health and well-being of 358 enlisted US Navy personnel who wintered-over in Antarctica between 1964 and 1974. Comparison with control group of 2396 men medically and psychologically qualified for Antarctic service but assigned elsewhere suggests that Antarctic service may provide long-term health benefits for some individuals.
