Numerical model for forecasting ice conditions on the Ohio River / Tao Shen Hung, Goranka Bjedov, Steven F. Daly, A.M. Wasantha Lal.

Title: Numerical model for forecasting ice conditions on the Ohio River / Tao Shen Hung, Goranka Bjedov, Steven F. Daly, A.M. Wasantha Lal.
Author(s): Hung, Tao Shen.
Bjedov, Goranka.
Daly, Steven F.
Lal, A. M. Wasantha.
Date: 1991.
In: CRREL Report. (1991.), Vol. 91-16 (1991)
Abstract: Develops numerical model, RICEOH, for simulating flow and ice conditions in dendritic river system. Flow computations use double-sweep algorithm for unsteady shallow-water wave equations. Distributions of water temperatures and ice concentration are determined using Lagrangian-Eulerian system. Formation of ice cover is modelled using existing equilibrium ice-jam theories. Frazil ice deposition and erosion are modelled by simple critical-velocity criterion. Thermal growth and decay of ice is calculated by quasi-steady finite-difference method. Model is applied to Ohio River system between Pittsburgh, PA, and Meldahl, OH.
