Record #112567:

Recent progress in snow and glacier mapping by synthetic aperture radar / Jeff Dozier, J.C. Shi.

Title: Recent progress in snow and glacier mapping by synthetic aperture radar / Jeff Dozier, J.C. Shi.
Author(s): Dozier, Jeff.
Shi, J. C.
Date: 1991.
In: Eos : transactions, American Geophysical Union. (1991.), Vol. 72(44, supplement) (1991)
Abstract: AGU Fall Meeting Program and Abstracts, December 9-13, 1991. Overcoming two problems: compensation for effects of rugged terrain, and distinguishing snow and glaciers from other surface covers. Measurement of Stokes matrix and linear combinations of its elements from polarimetric SAR permits evaluation of given target response to any designed polarizations of transmit and receive antenna and general images for target discrimination. C-band polarization signatures from aircraft can be used to map snow- and glacier-covered area without requiring topographic information, if Landsat or ground data are available to select training sites. Simulation shows that topographic effect from space-shuttle altitude is small, so snow- and glacier-mapping algorithm from polarimetric SAR can be developed.
