Ground frost restriction of subarctic Picea abies forest in northern Sweden, a dendrochronological analysis / Leif Kullman.
Title: | Ground frost restriction of subarctic Picea abies forest in northern Sweden, a dendrochronological analysis / Leif Kullman. |
Author(s): | Kullman, Leif. |
Date: | 1991. |
In: | Geografiska Annaler. Series A. Physical Geography. (1991.), Vol. 73A(3-4) (1991) |
Abstract: | Retrospective analysis of tree-ring chronology (1771-1989) and age structure, also recent canopy change and ground temperature were assessed. Tree-ring width correlated best with June mean temperature, when thawing of seasonal frost beneath crowns normally occurs. Hypothetically, steeply declining radial growth since 1950s preconditioned canopy dieback in 1987, triggered by extreme meteorological conditions associated with exceptionally late thawing and evolution of new local permafrost. Evidence points to previous permafrost episodes. Suggests that natural forest history is influenced by historical ground frost variations and that northern range limit of spruce in Sweden is partially controlled by severe ground freezing, late thawing, and edaphic conditions. |
