Microcrack nucleation in granular ice under uniaxial compression: effect of grain-size and temperature / P. Kalifa, S.J. Jones, T.D. Slade.
Title: | Microcrack nucleation in granular ice under uniaxial compression: effect of grain-size and temperature / P. Kalifa, S.J. Jones, T.D. Slade. |
Author(s): | Kalifa, P. Jones, S. J. Slade, T. D. |
Date: | 1991. |
In: | Annals of Glaciology. (1991.), Vol. 15 (1991) |
Abstract: | Focuses on physical mechanisms that control formation of microcracks in polycrystalline ice, close to ductile-brittle transition. Uniaxial compression tests were carried out on fresh-water isotropic granular ice, at constant strain rate of 6x10⁻⁴ s⁻¹. Effect was investigated of temperature (-2 to -39°C) and grain size (1 to 8 mm) on critical stress and strain at initial crack nucleation. Direct measurements of strain on specimens, associated with study of loading and unloading, permitted estimation of amount of anelastic strain involved in nucleation process. |
