Record #112491:
Coupling between the ocean and an ice shelf / Colin Fox, Vernon A. Squire.
Title: | Coupling between the ocean and an ice shelf / Colin Fox, Vernon A. Squire. |
Author(s): | Fox, Colin. Squire, Vernon A. |
Date: | 1991. |
In: | Annals of Glaciology. (1991.), Vol. 15 (1991) |
Abstract: | Investigated by using thick elastic plate equation to study transmission of wave energy into ice shelf. Strain set up on ice shelf by normally incident single-frequency ocean wave is calculated by completely solving equations governing velocity potential for system. Existing measurements of long-period strain on ice tongue are used to estimate required incident amplitude in open water to induce observed oscillations. Found that height of seas required indicates that ocean-wave driving is plausible forcing mechanism for observed oscillations. |
