Record #112488:

On the ridging of a thin sheet of lead ice / M.A. Hopkins, William D. Hibler, III.

Title: On the ridging of a thin sheet of lead ice / M.A. Hopkins, William D. Hibler, III.
Author(s): Hopkins, M. A.
Hibler, William D.,
Date: 1991.
In: Annals of Glaciology. (1991.), Vol. 15 (1991)
Abstract: Develops two-dimensional particle simulation model of sea-ice ridging process in which ridges are formed from intact layer of newly frozen lead ice colliding with thick multiyear floe. Blocks broken from leading edge of lead ice collect above and below multiyear floe to form ridge. Total energy consumed in ridging process, which is converted into potential energy of ridge structure and dissipated by frictional and inelastic contacts between blocks of ice, is calculated explicitly. Results suggest amount of energy required to ridge ice may be larger than previous estimates.
