Abstract: | In February 1989, several grounded icebergs were observed directly from ship and helicopter and by airborne synthetic aperture radar (SAR). Depending on characteristics of surrounding pack ice, grounded icebergs can leave elliptic tracks in pack, caused by tidal current. Tracks are readily observed in SAR images; therefore they can be used to identify location of icebergs. From 1991, SAR will be installed in polar orbiting satellites and provide means of monitoring icebergs on regular basis. |
