Record #112417:

Polythermal conditions in Arctic glaciers / Heinz Blatter, Kolumban Hutter.

Title: Polythermal conditions in Arctic glaciers / Heinz Blatter, Kolumban Hutter.
Author(s): Blatter, Heinz.
Hutter, Kolumban.
Date: 1991.
In: Journal of Glaciology. (1991.), Vol. 37(126) (1991)
Abstract: In ablation zone of Arctic valley glaciers, measurements suggest existence of layer of temperate ice underlying cold ice. Presents mathematical model that calculates temperature in cold part and position of cold-temperate transition surface. Application of model to Laika Glacier, Coburg Island, using present-day conditions, results in wholly cold glacier with cold sole, in contrast to observations. Present polythermal state of glacier is suspected to be remnant of earlier conditions; steady-state solutions representing polythermal structure can be found within range of prescribed conditions which are judged to be realistic for this glacier at its last maximum extent.
