Record #112398:

The role of weathering and pedological processes for the development of sorted circles on Kvadehuksletta, Svalbard - a short report / Bernd Etzelmüller, Johan Ludvig Sollid.

Title: The role of weathering and pedological processes for the development of sorted circles on Kvadehuksletta, Svalbard - a short report / Bernd Etzelmüller, Johan Ludvig Sollid.
Author(s): Etzelmüller, Bernd.
Sollid, Johan Ludvig.
Date: 1991.
In: Polar Research. (1991.), Vol. 9(2) (1991)
Abstract: Development of frost-sorted patterned ground in this peninsula in Spitsbergen is related directly to accumulation of fines, which appear to be residue of weathering of bedrock and autochtone dolomitic surficial material. Together with other geomorphological processes, such as slope washing, weathering is prerequisite and source for later frost sorting and mass displacements in soils. Dolomitic limestone is therefore presumed to be major controlling factor for frost processes on Kvadehuksletta; this emphasizes importance of bedrock petrography and sediment lithology for distribution of patterned ground on Svalbard.
