Dynamic unloading - is it the missing link in ice crushing and ice-structure interaction modelling? / R.W. Marcellus.

Title: Dynamic unloading - is it the missing link in ice crushing and ice-structure interaction modelling? / R.W. Marcellus.
Author(s): Marcellus, R. W.
Date: 1991.
Publisher: St. John's, Newfoundland: Memorial University of Newfoundland, Ocean Engineering Research Centre
In: POAC'91 : the 11th International Conference on Port and Ocean Engineering under Arctic Conditions, September 24-28, 1991, St. John's, Canada. (1991.), Vol.1.
Abstract: Dynamic unloading is proposed as explanation for size effect seen for ice crushing (i.e. decrease in crushing pressure with increasing size of structure). Combination of micro- and macrocracks which occur during ice crushing is proposed as primary cause of size effect for ice crushing. Describes proposed mechanisms occurring during crushing. Concept of stable macrocracking which causes dynamic unloading may provide missing link in modelling ice crushing and ice-structure interaction.
