Ice break-up model for Northumberland Strait / Gene Barry, Torkild Carstens, Kenneth R. Croasdale, Robert M.W. Frederking, Thomas G. Brown.

Title: Ice break-up model for Northumberland Strait / Gene Barry, Torkild Carstens, Kenneth R. Croasdale, Robert M.W. Frederking, Thomas G. Brown.
Author(s): Barry, Gene.
Carstens, Torkild.
Croasdale, Kenneth R.
Frederking, Robert M. W.
Brown, Thomas G.
Date: 1991.
Publisher: St. John's, Newfoundland: Memorial University of Newfoundland, Ocean Engineering Research Centre
In: POAC'91 : the 11th International Conference on Port and Ocean Engineering under Arctic Conditions, September 24-28, 1991, St. John's, Canada. (1991.), Vol.1.
Abstract: Model developed to investigate effect of proposed Prince Edward Island fixed link on ice conditions in strait, with especial reference to estimation of delay of ice-out due to bridge. 20 years of full data coverage made simulation model feasible. Simplified box model included export and import, top-side melting and sublimation, and under-side melting. Model was tuned through hindcasts to correlation of 0.97 between observed and predicted ice-out dates. 1000 seasons were run with and without bridge. Ice-out date was rather insensitive to bridge, possibly because, while bridge piers obstruct drift, they may also enhance under-side melting.
