Abstract: Presents measurements of mean flow and turbulence in boundary layer under drifting pack ice supporting hypothesis that turbulence derived from internal waves and other flow features in underlying pycnocline is important factor in maintenance of deep mixed layer. Suggests that similar phenomena may help account for relative depth of mixed layer in central Weddell Sea.
