Enhanced vertical stretching of basal ice in Jakobshavn Isbrae? A possible mechanism of fast flow / Almut Iken, Keith Echelmeyer, Martin Funk, William D. Harrison.

Title: Enhanced vertical stretching of basal ice in Jakobshavn Isbrae? A possible mechanism of fast flow / Almut Iken, Keith Echelmeyer, Martin Funk, William D. Harrison.
Author(s): Iken, Almut.
Echelmeyer, Keith.
Funk, Martin.
Harrison, William D.
Date: 1991.
In: Eos : transactions, American Geophysical Union. (1991.), Vol. 72(44, supplement) (1991)
Abstract: AGU Fall Meeting Program and Abstracts, December 9-13, 1991. Model proposed by same authors for englacial temperature of this glacier (ibid., p. 150) does not account for geometry changes away from centreline, which strongly influence convergent flow and its variation with depth. Consequently, certain differences in vertical ice deformation must appear in model as compared to actual glacier; these become apparent in different relative depths of modelled and measured temperature minima. Difference may reflect enhanced vertical stretching of basal ice and resulting thickening of layer of basal ice would influence surface velocity because basal ice is temperate and so less viscous than cold ice above.
