Record #112062:

The origin and evolution of Holocene sandur deposits in areas of jökulhlaup drainage, Iceland / Judith K. Maizels.

Title: The origin and evolution of Holocene sandur deposits in areas of jökulhlaup drainage, Iceland / Judith K. Maizels.
Author(s): Maizels, Judith K.
Date: 1991.
Publisher: Dordrecht: Kluwer Academic
In: Environmental change in Iceland : past and present. (1991.),
Abstract: Evidence suggests that sandar of south Iceland do not owe their origin exclusively to regular seasonal activity of braided meltwater rivers. Instead, many sandar are product of infrequent, catastrophic jökulhlaups, caused by subglacial volcanic eruptions, and/or by emptying of ice-contact lakes. These processes produce distinctive contrasts in sandur sedimentology, with three generalized models recognizable.
