Record #112060:

Lichenometric dating, lichen population studies and Holocene glacial history in Tröllaskagi, northern Iceland / Christopher J. Caseldine.

Title: Lichenometric dating, lichen population studies and Holocene glacial history in Tröllaskagi, northern Iceland / Christopher J. Caseldine.
Author(s): Caseldine, Christopher J.
Date: 1991.
Publisher: Dordrecht: Kluwer Academic
In: Environmental change in Iceland : past and present. (1991.),
Abstract: In view of problems of lichenometric dating as applied in northern Iceland, studies of populations of Rhizocarpon geographicum s.l. are advocated in addition to using largest thalli alone. Such studies can provide supporting dating method for last two centuries and also indicate presence of disturbed lichen populations. Traditional lichenometric dating of recent end moraines in Tröllaskagi confirms that there were five periods of moraine abandonment. In order to extend moraine dating beyond lichenometric time scale (pre-1800), it is argued that greater emphasis will have to be placed on surrogate climatic records from peats and lake sediments which can be dated by other methods.
