Abstract: Setting off on Siberia Expedition, author saw Douglas Carruthers's book describing previously unknown Soyot reindeer nomads (part of Tuvintsy people) in isolated taiga near sources of Yenisey. So expedition passed through Soyot country to obtain further details. Book discusses Soyots' possible origin and nearest relatives and describes their homeland. Way of life, clothing, language, political organisation, reindeer herding, skis, dogs, food and drink, shamans, Buddhism and worship, spirit houses - aava - and beliefs about spirit world, place and price of women are described, and, where relevant, compared with those of similar peoples. Final section described Russian colonists in region.
