Record #111879:

Middle Pleistocene age of the Nome River glaciation, northwestern Alaska / Darrell S. Kaufman, Robert C. Walter, Julie Brigham-Grette, David M. Hopkins.

Title: Middle Pleistocene age of the Nome River glaciation, northwestern Alaska / Darrell S. Kaufman, Robert C. Walter, Julie Brigham-Grette, David M. Hopkins.
Author(s): Kaufman, Darrell S.
Walter, Robert C.
Brigham-Grette, Julie.

Date: 1991.
In: Quaternary Research. (1991.), Vol. 36(3) (1991)
Abstract: Presents results of ⁴⁰Ar/³⁹Ar laser-fusion analyses conducted on mg-quantity bulk subsamples of Minnie Creek lava that indicate presence of extraneous ⁴⁰Ar which rendered conventional K-Ar dates for larger bulk samples of same flow too old. Younger age for Nome River glaciation is further supported by new K-Ar age determination on lava flow at Lava Creek, where K-Ar whole-rock analysis of normally magnetized basaltic lava, that predates Nome River glaciation, yielded preliminary age of 564±66 ka BP. These results, coupled with amino acid epimerization and palaeomagnetic criteria, demonstrate that Nome River glaciation and subsequent shift from extensive to restricted glacial advances, is considerably younger than 800 ka.
