Crack opening and propagation in S2 freshwater ice / L.J. Weber, Wilfrid A. Nixon.
Title: | Crack opening and propagation in S2 freshwater ice / L.J. Weber, Wilfrid A. Nixon. |
Author(s): | Weber, L. J. Nixon, Wilfrid A. |
Date: | 1991. |
Publisher: | New York: American Society of Mechanical Engineers |
In: | Proceedings of the 10th International Conference on Offshore Mechanics and Arctic Engineering - 1991 ... Stavanger, Norway, June 23-28, 1991. Vol. 4 - Arctic/polar technology. (1991.), |
Abstract: | Fracture toughness tests conducted on S2 columnar fresh-water ice at temperature of -5°C and at four loading rates. Crack mouth and crack tip opening displacements were measured and these values used to determine location of rotation axis within samples. At high rates, rotation axis coincided with effective crack tip, but as loading rate decreased, rotation axis advanced into remaining ligament during testing as result of increased crack plasticity. Results suggest that two-gauge method of measuring crack opening can be used effectively to determine crack length in fatigue tests on ice. |
