Abstract: Important parameter in modelling sea-ice/structure interactions. Describes two techniques: one uses volume of fluid flowing into and out of confining cell to determine volumetric strain of sample, and second method depends on measurement of diametral and axial strain. Results of tests on multiyear ice are discussed; similar results are obtained up to strain at peak strength, but, after that point, diverge. Divergence is related to shape changes in sample for which diametral strain method cannot account. Fluid flow approach provides volumetric strain over whole sample and is not affected by sample shape change.
