Abstract: New system developed at National Research Council of Canada and used in April 1989 to test sea ice on Hobson's Choice ice island, which was located near northern tip of Ellef Rignes Island. This iceberg was generated from Ward Hunt Ice Shelf in 1982-83, and now consists of thick strip of shelf ice with 5 to 10 m of thick multiyear ridged sea ice on either side. Tests indicated that local pressures up to 40 MPa could be generated in cold ice (-19°C) during ice/structure interactions for displacement rate of 0.2 mm s⁻¹.
