Abstract: In-situ temperature measurements of ice/indenter interface during testing indicated that temperature rose to 0°C, suggesting presence of liquid. Thin-section analysis of ice that has bonded to indenter after test showed very small diameter grains with rust particle inclusions, from indenter, at grain boundaries, which was indicative of presence and rapid freezing of liquid. Video records of ice/indenter interface during indentation and records of displacement, load and temperature were consistent with process of pressure melting and heat generation by flow of melt.
