Record #111860:

The effect of internal waves on sea ice drift / Michael S. Bruno.

Title: The effect of internal waves on sea ice drift / Michael S. Bruno.
Author(s): Bruno, Michael S.
Date: 1991.
Publisher: New York: American Society of Mechanical Engineers
In: Proceedings of the 10th International Conference on Offshore Mechanics and Arctic Engineering - 1991 ... Stavanger, Norway, June 23-28, 1991. Vol. 4 - Arctic/polar technology. (1991.),
Abstract: Presents theoretical analysis of internal wave generation by sea ice moving over stratified ocean. Enhanced vertical momentum transfer associated with these internal wave motions results in increase in resisting (drag) force at ice/water interface. Dependence of drag coefficient on physical parameters is presented for specific ice and ocean conditions. Findings suggest that internal waves can, in certain conditions, represent significant contribution to overall ice/water resistance to motion, with implications for modelling ice motion in ice marginal zones.
